Female Video Game Characters Went from Stunning to ‘Seriously’ Woke

Alright lovelies, let’s talk about something that’s been bothering me for a while now: the alarming decline in how female video game characters look.

I keep seeing this stupid drama pop up in my feed. Some dumb game by Naughty Dog featuring a girl with a shaved head... that looks strangely a lot like Cat Brah. This is definitely more his territory complaining about video games. But I'm gonna take a poke at it.

Gaming setup with RGB keyboard, mouse, and monitors in a blue-lit room. Black and red gaming chairs line the desk, creating a futuristic vibe.

Now... here is my take. Both sides are just as dumb as the other. Trust me, honey, everyone sounds equally stupid here. But who wastes the most money on video games? That is who the companies should be catering to. Unless you don't like money. And judging from the comments, it isn't the ones defending whatever is happening. Either way, stop flooding Facebook with this embarrassing back and forth.

I get it game studios, you want so badly to be woke, to destroy stereotypical gender blah, blah, blah. Sure. And players are fighting for beautiful women you can drool over while playing with one hand. Fine.

Here is my take.

Once upon a time, these ladies were the epitome of badass meets beautiful. They could slay dragons and look good doing it. But now? It’s like the designers went, “What if we made her look... aggressively average to the point where you can't tell if they got a penis or not?” And the world applauded.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m all for realistic representation. But can someone explain why “realistic” now means “frumpy,” "manly," “unwashed,” or “I-just-crawled-out-of-bed”? If I wanted to see that, I’d just look in the mirror on a Monday morning, babe.

Let’s break down what’s happening here because this nonsense needs to stop.

From Fierce to Forgettable

Let’s start with the basics: female video game characters used to have presence. They were stunning, fit, powerful, and larger than life. They made you want to be them or at least hang out with them.

Now?

They look like they’re one coffee spill away from a mental breakdown or a cross dressing Chadillac trying to one-up real females.

I’m not saying every character needs to look like a runway model, but can we at least aim for aspirational? The whole point of video games is escapism.

If I wanted to see bland, boring, and sad... I’d scroll through Karen’s Facebook photos, not boot up a $70 game.

“Realistic” Doesn’t Mean Ugly

Somewhere along the line, game developers got it into their heads that making female characters look “realistic” meant stripping away every ounce of charm, beauty, and effort. Newsflash: real women can look stunning and be relatable. Shocking, I know.

Do you remember Sarah Conner from the older Terminator movies? She made me want to go do some pull ups! Pronto!

Also, let’s not pretend male characters are getting that same dumbing down treatment. The dudes are still ripped, chiseled, and rocking jawlines sharp enough to cut glass. But the women? Apparently, we’re supposed to settle for meh.

Cute double standard, woke video games.

Where’s the Effort?

You can’t convince me that making female characters look this bad is a design choice. No, babe, it’s laziness. The kind of laziness that says, “Let’s slap a baggy hoodie on her and call it a day.” Where’s the style? The flair? The effort to make her memorable?

And don’t even get me started on hair physics.

How is it that in 2024, a female character’s hair still looks like it was glued on as an afterthought? We have the technology to render blades of grass in 4K, but giving her a decent ponytail is apparently too much work.

Let Women Be Iconic Again

Here’s the thing: iconic female characters don’t just look good—they feel good. They have personality, confidence, and that undeniable X factor that makes you want to follow their story. But when you strip them down to beige outfits, dull expressions, and lifeless energy, you take away everything that made them special.

It’s not about objectification; it’s about artistry.

Make her bold.

Make her fierce.

Make her someone I want to root for, not someone I want to hand a bottle of dry shampoo.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but this looks more like the insertion of men into every possible thing. Slowly but surely, women are getting the pink boot. Look at sports, now look at video games. Basically everything is going to be a man pretending to be a woman... or a woman that looks like a man. Where is my fucking representation!?

Video Games Don't Need to be Woke

Video games are supposed to be a mix of fantasy and fun, not a visual representation of suck. So to the designers out there: do better. Give us female characters we can admire, aspire to, and fall in love with all over again.

Because right now? Babe, it’s not giving what it’s supposed to give.
